BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The National Fire Research Laboratory (NFRL) located on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Gaithersburg, Maryland campus is a unique experimental facility dedicated to understanding fire behavior and structural response to fire. The research conducted in the NFRL includes the advancement of real-scale structural-fire measurements, generation of technical data to improve fire and building codes, validation of physics-based models, and post-fire investigations; of which requires instrumentation that allows the NFRL to conduct high fidelity measurement and provide impactful data to the fire safety community. One of the tools available to the NFRL to capture these many measurements is the Traverse Module prototype, which is a rugged and modular positioning systems that are automated and easily deployable to harsh temperature environments. A replacement of the existing Traverse Module with the listed specifications would significantly upgrade the division’s capabilities.
